Sound Healing Contraindications

Most of these potential sound healing contraindications apply to working directly on or very close to the body.
Please review before participating in sound healing. This is not to be considered an all-inclusive list.
Always use your own discretion about the impact of any modality on your well-being and consult with your health care provider if you have any questions or concerns.

Do not participate in sound healing if you have

  • epilepsy or seizures triggered by sound, unless you have consulted your health care provider to ensure you are in no danger of seizure from sound vibrations

  • a post-surgical site that is not fully healed and closed, or sutures that have not been removed

  • experienced recent whiplash

People with the following should consult their health care provider before participating in sound healing for the first time

  • epilepsy or seizures

  • pregnancy

  • cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac pacemakers, or artificial heart valves

  • carotid stenosis if using in the area of the carotid artery/larynx

  • a stent or shunt

  • a deep brain stimulation device (DBS)

Keep a minimum of 8 inches (20 cm) between a sound healing instrument and

  • an implanted heart pacemaker, stent, shunt or defibrillator

  • the area of a metallic implant

  • implants that have not completely healed

  • the neck if you have carotid atherosclerosis

Do not use sound healing instruments directly on

  • the body of a pregnant person, especially during the first 12 weeks

  • deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the leg or known thrombi

  • the body of someone with weak, fractured or osteoporotic bones

  • any acute inflammations, including inflamed joints and veins

  • diseased veins

  • implants, screws or artificial joints

  • tumors

  • open wounds or weeping eczema

  • the skin of someone with inflammatory skin disorder
